The Navy League of the United States - Levante Council

The Navy League of the United States, Levante Council, is part of a worldwide non-profit association, formed to offer assistance and hospitality to the service men and women of the United States and NATO Alliance. The Levante Council, covering the Costa Blanca from Alicante to Valencia, has a membership of around one hundred mainly American and British, but also including members from Holland, Belgium, France and Germany.

A luncheon meeting is held every month with special emphasis on the American holidays of Independence Day (4th July) and Thanksgiving Day (4tyh Thursday in November) with food typical of these celebrations. On Independence Day, a picnic style buffet is enjoyed while on Thanksgiving Day there's a whole roast turkey on every table. Our Council is always delighted to offer hospitality to military personnel who are visiting or are based in Spain such as when a naval vessel is in port in Alicante or Valencia. At those times a reception is organized either in the form of a garden party at the home of one of the members or lunch at a local restaurant. All members involve themselves entusiastically in these activities which are much appreciated by the military personnel, most of whom will have been at sea for many months. In past years, we in the Levante Council have been pleased to host receptions for officers of both British and American ships, such as HMS Montrose and the USS Mitscher, and look forward to welcoming vessels from other members of the Alliance.

In addition, regular donations are made to the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society. The organization, which has an office at Rota, in southern Spain, exists to help the families of serving members of the armed forces, who are in urgent need of financial assistance, and makes no deuctions for administrative costs.

The NLUS has more than 60,000 members worldwide, none of whom are serving members of the armed forces of the United States or NATO Alliance members. There are many NLUS Councils in Spain and most European countries as well as Great Britain. The Levante Council is proud to be the largest council in Europe, and we look forward to welcoming new members.

Registered in Alicante and Calpe for the Costa Blanca area, the Levante Council of the Navy League of the United States covers the Costa Blanca of Spain from Alicante to Valencia and was chartered in 1981 at a time when the Sixth Fleet was prominent in the Mediterranean. In those days, telephones were scarce and money exchange difficult so the services provided by the Levante Council were much appreciated by visiting military personnel. Through the years, the Levante Council members have entertained and assisted numerous men and women of the United States and other services from the lowest ranks to Admirals.
